A Note From James:

The Fourth instalment in my debut collection, Hood Portraits.

The Architect II an anonymous figure considers a jewel-like model of I. M. Pei’s iconic Bank of China building in the dark hall of a placeless manor.  Growing up in Hong Kong I considered this building my first experience with sculpture, as its face and meaning completely changed depending on which part of the city you were facing it from. explore themes of identity and concealment. Inspired by the black hoods worn by arrested suspects in Hong Kong, I reflect on how these hoods, intended to protect identities, often strip away humanity instead. Through Architect 1, I use my signature focus on expression and detail to convey the quiet resilience of my subject, even though much of their face is concealed.
